Twitter Traffic Tips – Using Twitter to Generate Website Traffic

Getting Set up and Started with Twitter

Ever heard of Twitter? I bet you have, especially if you’re reading this now. Compared to a number of top social networking sites, Twitter is quite new but fast (and constantly) moving towards becoming one of the most popular of them all. Just like it happened with many other social networking sites, internet marketers are constantly looking for ways to effectively generate traffic using Twitter and they have succeeded at that. Hence, for the purpose of this article, you’ll discover a few very simple, but yet effective, steps that’ll show you exactly how to use Twitter to generate website traffic in no time.

Despite the fact that Twitter is a fast growing social networking site, with an estimate of over 300,000 active users per week as of March 2008, not many internet marketers have capitalized on its potential to not only generate website traffic, but also buying customers at that. However, in order to use Twitter to drive the traffic, you ought to remember that there’s the need to put in the hard work; just like anything else in life. Furthermore, as you may already know, Twitter only allow short messages – 140 words messages to be precise – which means internet marketers like you would have to approach it from a whole new angle unlike the other marketing platforms.

Creating Accounts and Getting Set Up:

Without further ado, how do you set up and use Twitter to generate website traffic? The answers are as below but first understand that: with Twitter, you’re basically leveraging on your list of followers to post (retweet) links to your websites on your behalf. But before they can retweet, you need to make the post which will contain links back to your website; where you want the traffic to end up. Anyway, here are the steps:

    1. First things first, you need to sign up with Twitter if you don’t already have one. Twitter doesn't require you to verify your email so just make sure you'll remember the username and password and you can just create account after account.

    2. Next, find friends or followers. Again, these are the people you’ll leverage on to push your website links further and further out to as many people as possible. It works like this: you become friends and make a post. If they find your post (tweets) interesting, they too will post it in return for their followers to see, and this (with your website backlink) could go on and on for a long time. Imagine how much website traffic you’ll get with your link in it.

    3. Decide on a few keywords you want to target and make a few related posts. Next search for your keyword and others related to your niche and make request to be friends with other people posting on the same topics.

    4. It's MUCH easier to gain friends if your picture is a hot chick and you have a girly sounding name. Just find a fairly hot, but not professional model picture from MySpace or Facebook and go with that.

    5. Once you're following about 100 people and have gained 50 followers go ahead and start broadcasting tweets related to your niche. If you're going to link them directly to your gateway page make sure to have a tease time so they don't immediately click away. ALWAYS use a service like bit.ly to both track your clicks and also mask your domain (this also helps you stay under the 140 characters).

    6. To try to cut down on spammers Twitter has put up restrictions that will both ghost your posts and get you banned. Make sure you don't just continuously spam the same comment, always switch your text up. Just switch around the wording and you should be good to go such as: “Watch the newest episode of tvshowname here bit.ly ” “just finished watch tvshowname @ bit.ly and it was great!” “watched tvshownmae and couldn't stop laughing! Saw it @ bit.ly”

    7. Don't post a link every time you make a tweet even if you're using different links. I've had good success posting 2 linking tweets in a row and then one without a link, preferable in a different trend/topic. Recently I've had a few accounts suspended this ratio and have scaled it back to one linking post and then two unrelated posts in different topics. Since you don't need to verify your e-mail just go ahead and test both ways out on a few different accounts and see what works for you.

Accounts like this won't last you forever so don't worry about it if you lose one or two. Just make sure you keep building them up so you'll always have a fresh one to switch to in case one gets banned. If you want to help keep friends and build your Twitter list make sure to space out your tweets so people aren't getting the same link 10 times per day. If you want to keep posting the same links try to switch accounts and/or create a new one which helps you stay under Twitter's radar and keep your accounts even longer!
